10.10.10 Race report
10.10.10, on that easy date to remember, I was on a mission, running (three year after my last race) a marathon.
The beginning of this story took its roots on the early months of 2010 when my injury decided to break up with me after almost three years spinning my left ankle... So I decided to take the story where I left it in October 2007 when I've done 3:41:58 (that time was after 3 marathons, my new PR).
I started running back from the beginning, with only a goal in mind, run again without pain.
My preparation started without race name in mind, I took the workouts one after the other till April when I finally choose Brussels, and in June the goal was set, run it under 3:35:00.
In August, in order to get really fit I started to cut on junk foods, beers and social occupations, focused on one thing, achieve my goal.
In early September I was very lucky to catch a golden staphylococcus, which took almost three weeks of my training, but helped me to loose the extra 5 kilos I had to perform well on race day (in fact I've lost more muscles than fat to finish around a 15 body fat percent).
Finally, after almost 1,000 km in 2010 under my belt, I was on the starting line full of expectations but also with fears.
At exactly 9 am the 2,000 beasts were unleashed.
The first kilometres were flat enough to find and stay in a good pace.
I passed kilometre 10 in 50:36 (a little bit slow), there my fans waving and shouting at me gave me the boost to increase the pace till the half marathon timer; which I passed in 1:44:19, right on the 3:30:00 tempo.
From kilometres 22 and 32 I started to slowly loose my pace, and having sore legs and torn stomach...
Finally, that bad trip ended and I felt the benefits of my training (especially the 45 kilometres workout I did 2 weeks before the race), I resumed my normal stride and started to increase the pace, kilometre after kilometre.
At kilometre 36 the half marathon runners merged with us, this gave me a big ego boost because I started to overtake a lot of these ones to finally finished the last kilometre and the arrival on the Grand Place, as if I was floating and I crossed the finish line on 3:30:36, unfortunately I missed my friends on the finish line due to the overcrowded Grand Place.
I set my new PR and I reached my goal on that day - that time ended a perfect weekend.
After a little rest I will now keep training, with in mind of this two race Barcelona (March 6) or Roma (March 20), with an objective under 3:25:00 and the desire to run it in 3:20:00.
So cross already these two dates on your calendar, I will soon pick the date and scouting for fans to come to support me.
See you there...
